Main Functions

ILGA World Database is a digital tracking tool designed to gather data on issues pertaining to sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) in five main areas: legal frameworks (covering 18 legal categories for all 193 UN Member States and 47 non-UN Member jurisdictions), international human rights treaties, UN treaty bodies, UN special procedures and Universal Periodic Review (UPR). It tracks the latest developments in the field of SOGIESC and the progress made by States in implementing legislation that is coherent with international standards.

The tool allows users to access all data concerning one country through the Jurisdiction feature.

Through the Advanced Search tool, users can further refine their search using specific criteria such as country, legal category, and keywords and access the desired information on SOGIESC issues. With the “Topic” search option users can find theme-specific results across categories in various domestic legal frameworks and UN data.

Furthermore, the Compare tool enables the comparison of two or more jurisdictions or a geopolitical group and the assessment of their progress in a given legal category tracked under the “Legal Frameworks” area of the Database.
