The Academy’s aim is to produce the best possible Master’s Programme in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. We have benefited from considerable goodwill and generous support from our founders: the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, as well as from our partners the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the International Committee of the Red Cross. We are also grateful for the support received in the past from the Swiss Network for International Studies; this support has enabled us to develop the Programme in new and ambitious directions, adding extra optional courses and practical modules, reorienting the simulation, and providing for supervised internships as part of the programme.

The 12-month programme includes core courses, optional courses,  professionalizing activities,  and the writing of a LL.M paper.

»   Core courses cover all branches of international law applicable to armed conflicts: Public International Law International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, International Refugee Law and International Criminal Law. These courses are taught in English, although students may decide to pass the exam in French. They are completed by tutorials given both in English and in French by the Academy’s teaching assistants.
»   Optional courses are taught in English or in French and cover issues such as the UN and the emerging culture of the end of impunity, the special rules of protection in armed conflict, the repression of international crimes by national courts. Students can therefore follow a fully bilingual programme if they wish and obtain a diploma mentioning the bilingualism.
»   Professionalizing activities, such as internships at local NGOs and intergovernmental organizations, may replace optional courses. The Academy ensures the work carried out by interns consists mainly of legal tasks relevant to the areas of study.
»   A LL.M. paper, either in English or in French, in one of the subject matters of the programme. The best LL.M. paper is awarded the Geneva Academy Best LL.M. paper Prize and the paper which best reflects Henry Dunant's vision is awarded the Henry Dunant Prize.
