Prof. Vincent Chetail


Vincent Chetail is Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and Director of the Global Migration centre. He is also a Board Member of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and, from 2004 to 2012, was the Research Director of the Geneva Academy.

Prof. Andrew Clapham

Andrew Clapham is Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies since 1997.Before joining the Institute, he was the Representative of Amnesty International to the United Nations in New York. His current research relates to the role of non-state actors in international law and related questions in human rights and humanitarian law. His publications include Human Rights: A Very Short Introduction (2007), Human Rights Obligations of Non-State Actors (2006), and International Human Rights Lexicon (2005), with Susan Marks.

Prof. Paola Gaeta


Paola Gaeta (PhD in Law, European University Institute, (1997)) is Professor of International Criminal Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva and Adjunct Professor of International Criminal Law at the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies. Since 2007, she is Director of the LL.M. and Training Programmes of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and since 2011 Director of the Geneva Academy itself. Before joining the University of Geneva she was Professor  of Public International Law at the University of Florence. She is a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of International Criminal Justice and was member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of International Law in 2010-2012. Her publications include the third and updated edition of Cassese’s International Criminal Law (2013), The UN Genocide Convention: A Commentary (ed.) (2009), and The Statute of the International Criminal Court: A Commentary (co-editor with A. Cassese and J. R.W D. Jones) (2001).

Robert Kolb has worked as a legal advisor for the International Committee of the Red Cross (1998 - 1999) and sporadically for the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (since 2000). He was the Secretary of the Institut de Droit International (1999 - 2003) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the University Centre for International Humanitarian Law (2001 – 2003), renamed the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights in 2007.

Prof. Nicolas Michel

Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva, Nicolas Michel is also Adjunct Professor at the Graduate Institute of International Studies and Development. Since March 2009 he chairs the Board of the Academy. From 2004-2008, he was Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel.

Prof. Marco Sassòli

Marco Sassòli, is professor of international law and director of the Department of international law and international organization at the University of Geneva. He is commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists’ (ICJ). From 2001-2003, he has taught at the Université du Québec à Montreal, Canada, where he remains associate professor. From 1985-1997 he has worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), inter alia as deputy head of its legal division, head of the ICRC delegations in Jordan and Syria and as protection coordinator for the former Yugoslavia. During a sabbatical leave in 2011, he joined again the ICRC delegation in Islamabad. He has also served as registrar at the Swiss Supreme Court.
