The one-week long conflict over South Ossetia in August 2008 left lives, homes, and communities devastated, and gave rise to numerous allegations of violations of international humanitarian law (IHL). In January 2016 the International Criminal Court authorized the opening of a formal investigation by the Office of the Prosecutor into the situation.
In the framework of the LLM course on IHL given by Professor Marco Sassòli of the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva, students will plead for Russia and Georgia arguing that the side they represent has respected IHL while the adverse side has violated IHL.
In front of a jury composed of Professor Marco Sassòli and Elvina Pothelet, teaching assistant at the Geneva Academy, students (whose roles were attributed by the lot) will plead on:

The second term of the Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law started with a very special occasion: a study trip to Nuremberg. A key site for thinking about transitional justice as a contemporary response to mass atrocity.
A Geneva Academy team will participate in the 2017 Nuremberg Moot Court, which will take place on 26-29 July 2017. It will be one of the 42 teams coming from 27 countries.
In this opening lecture, Professor Geoff Gilbert will discuss how, as conflict and repression end and states move towards a period of transition, those who have been displaced can participate in the restoration process.
This course considers rule of law work from the perspective of the practitioner, using case studies, procurement documents and project reports to help students understand how rule of law projects are developed and implemented in the field.
