Organisé par la Faculté des Lettres de l'Université de Genève, Département d'histoire générale, avec le soutien du Comité International de la Croix-Rouge et de l’Académie de droit international humanitaire et de droits humains à Genève.

Histoire et humanitaire. Quoique parfaitement compatibles, l'exploration du temps long et l'action dans l'urgence sont rarement confrontées, comme si elles se situaient à des niveaux d'analyse, de compréhension et d'exécution totalement différents. Actuellement, la pluspart des personnes impliquées dans des opérations d'aide ne se préoccupent guère des évolutions politiques, sociales ou économiques lointaines qui ont marqué le lieu de leur intervention. Et si les historiens s'attachent toujours plus à étudier les contextes et les entreprises de secours, rares sont ceux qui voient une utilité concrète aux travaux qu'ils produisent. Concentrées sur le même thème, ces deux sphères communiquent finalement peu entre elles.
