Extracurricular Activities

A seminar on torture given by Nils Melzer, Swiss Human Rights Chair at the Geneva Academy and UN Special Rapporteur on torture A seminar on torture given by Nils Melzer, Swiss Human Rights Chair at the Geneva Academy and UN Special Rapporteur on torture

Extracurricular activities allow our LLM students to focus on issues addressed in class with experts and practitioners, explore new subjects, and develop their network in Geneva and beyond. They enrich the LLM programme by widening our students’ perspectives and knowledge of the law and its implementation.

Military Briefings

This unique series of events relating to military institutions and the law aims to improve our students’ knowledge of military actors and operations and build bridges between the military and civilian worlds.

Military guests – on active duty, retired or from the reserve – discuss military institutions, their missions as well as operational and legal challenges they face in their daily work around these six themes: military organization and operational decision-making; operational law; integration of the law in military training; practical examples of legal challenges in operations; military justice; and weapons systems.

Each briefing is divided into two parts: a presentation aimed at equipping students with basic knowledge on the selected theme, and a discussion, where the guest speaker engages with students on the challenges raised by the theme.

This extracurricular activity is coordinated by our Teaching Assistants Cyprien Fluzin and Revaz Tkemaladze.

Human Rights Mechanisms Series

This series of events on human rights mechanisms aim to improve our students’ knowledge of both United Nations (UN) and regional human rights structures and procedures, including the different actors that can engage within such a complex ecosystem.

It will allow them to meet and learn from selected guest speakers who live the different mechanisms during their day-to-day work, adding a first-person perspective to the learning experience. Professionals from different human rights mechanisms –  including staff from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, independent experts, diplomats, and regional courts registries – will discuss their institution of belonging, their monitoring and/or complaints handling functions, as well as the main challenges they face in their daily work.

This extracurricular activity is coordinated by our Research Fellow Dr Domenico Zipoli, who has extensive experience in the work of international and regional human rights mechanisms.
