Eugénie Duss

Eugénie Duss is a Research Fellow at the Geneva Academy, where she leads to joint organization of the Current Issues in Armed Conflict conference, co-organized with the Conflict and Crisis Hub at the University of Essex. She is also in charge of coordinating the Military Briefings, as well as developing updates for the RULAC portal.

Here areas of expertise include international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law, international criminal law, and the challenge of keeping IHL realistic for armed non-State actors and de facto authorities.
Before joining the Geneva Academy, Eugénie worked for the Mechanism of Moscow’s first Experts Mission for Ukraine. She also supported TRIAL International’s programmes as a Fundraising and Reporting Assistant, conducted interviews with former FARC Commanders in dissident areas in Colombia and worked as a Teaching and Research Assistant at the University of Geneva. In addition, as Visiting Officer for the Swiss Human Rights League, she visited detainees at Champ-Dollon alleging that their human rights have been violated, and acted as an instructor in IHL for the “Raid Cross” programme run by the Geneva Red Cross Youth. Besides her current position at the Geneva Academy, Eugénie also works as a Research Consultant.

Eugénie holds a PhD degree, in which she determined the IHL applicable to international armed conflicts by proxy. She completed a master’s degree in law and won the Award for the best Master Thesis for her thesis entitled “The Child in the Theater of War: the Interplay between Self-Defense and Participation in Hostilities?” (original version in French).
