Andreas Ziegler is Professor of International Law and Director of the LLM Programme in International Business Law at the University of Lausanne. He holds a conjoint professorship at the Law School of the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) as well as visiting appointments at the Universities of St. Gallen and of the Saarland (Saarbrücken) as well as ETH Zurich.

Prior to joining the University of Lausanne, Andreas Ziegler was a civil servant working for several Swiss Ministries (Foreign Affairs, Trade) and international organizations (European Commission, European Free Trade Association). In these roles, he negotiated several multilateral and bilateral agreements and was also a delegate to the WTO, UNCTAD, OECD, Energy Charter and other international organizations.

He has published widely on Swiss, international and European law and regularly advises governments, international organizations, NGOs and private clients and has represented them before various domestic and international courts and arbitral tribunals. He is on the permanent roster of panelists of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), and a Member of the European Commission of Sexual Orientation Law (ECSOL). He is the President of the Swiss Chapter of the International Law Association (ILA) and on the Board of the Swiss and the German Societies of International Law and the European Law Faculties Association - ELFA).

Taught Courses

Sexuality, Gender Identity and International Law

This course gives an overview of the role of sexuality and gender identity in international human rights law (e.g. persecution, discrimination, harassment etc.) and international humanitarian law (e.g. sexual violence). A special emphasis will be put on the taboos in the international discourse and the role of non-state actors.
